The RGF Ozone Water Treatment PlanDecades ago, scientists discovered how to artificially produce ozone through electrical discharge. The method has been used in Europe for water purification since the early 1900s and has been rapidly gaining popularity in municipal water plants in the United States.
In the 1970s, an inexpensive and reliable method of making ozone was discovered utilizing a specific wave of UV light. Ozone generated from UV light is just as effective as ozone produced from electrical discharge or naturally occurring ozone. This production method is preferred for many applications based on cost, reliability, maintenance and quantity.
Industries have been using ozone successfully for many years in a wide range of applications, including food and beverage processing, water purification, swimming pools, algae removal in ponds, and spa purification. In recent years, ozone’s benefits also have been realized in the wastewater treatment business.
RGF started experimenting with ozone in 1985 and cautiously started using the RGF Turbohydrozone® in their wastewater treatment systems in 1987. The Turbohydrozone® was a great success and drastically improved our wastewater system performance.
Water Treat Sizing FormulaThe RGF ozone water treatment program consists of the following:
- Ultraviolet Light (UV) produced ozone - 0.1% concentration (for potable water treatment)
- Corona Discharge (CD) produced ozone - Up to 10% concentration with oxygen (for potable or wastewater treatment)
RGF TurboHydrozone® UV Ozone Systems are low cost, low maintenance systems ideal for low-flow potable water systems where high concentrations of ozone are not necessary. UV ozone is also very effective in advanced oxidation systems such as RGF’s CO3P or UV/O3. Systems.
RGF CD Ozone Systems RGF CD Ozone Systems RGF CD Ozone Systems are preferred when high concentrations of ozone are needed to achieve high mass transfer efficiency in water such as (Note refer to the Engineering Data Section for a comparison of UV vs. CD ozone):
Applications
- High flow rates
- Single pass treatment
- Ozone residuals in water
- Wastewater disinfection
TurboHydrozone® Ozone Water Treatment Systems destroy by oxidation the following water contaminants:
- Bacteria
- Virus
- Iron*
- Algae
- Odors
- Oils, Fats & Grease
- Color
- BOD/COD
- Chlorine
- Manganese*
- VOC’s
*by precipation
TurboHydrozone® Ozone Water Treatment Systems destroy by oxidation the following water contaminants:
*by precipation
Water Treat Sizing FormulaUse the following formula for calculating the applied dosage of ozone in water.
(Grams per hour / Gallons per minute) X 4.41 = PPM Dosage
Example for TurboHydrozone® Model 60:
This is an example of a 5 gpm venturi system utilizing a TurboHydrozone® Model 60.
(0.24 gm/hr 5 gpm) x 4.41 = 0.211 PPM Dosage
The amount of applied ozone to purify water depends upon the temperature and the amount and type of contaminants.
